Engaging Undergraduates in Your Research

Organizers and Facilitators: Lori Pollock (pollock@udel.edu), University of Delaware and Denys Poshyvanyk (denys@cs.wm.edu), College of William and Mary.

Date and Time: Tuesday May 17, 2016 from 7:00-9:00pm, Pecos Room, Austin Renaissance Hilton Hotel.

Involving undergraduates in CS research has many benefits for both the undergraduates and faculty mentor. It’s an exciting way for students to gain knowledge and independent problem solving skills. It exposes them to interesting projects and the research process, thereby keeping them in CS, even inspiring them to go to graduate school. Faculty mentors increase their research team with eager young minds with strong programming skills to try out their ideas. Using an interactive format, this 2hour workshop will focus on why and how to engage and successfully mentor undergraduates in your research projects, including collaborative brainstorming on possible undergraduate projects within your current research focus. We will also discuss funding opportunities specifically for supporting undergraduate research and resources for mentoring undergraduate researchers.

This  free  workshop will begin promptly at 7pm with dessert, coffee/tea and networking activities, and it will end at 9pm.

Who should attend: Senior graduate students and teaching/research faculty at all levels who are interested in how better to engage undergrads in research. The workshop is limited to 25 participants who are also registered to participate in other event(s) associated with ICSE 2016.

How to register: Register through the ICSE 2016 registration site.

When to register: Registration will open by the end of January. Registrations for this workshop will be accepted until the maximum limit is reached (25).
